You are currently getting prepared to release ‘Play Hard’, which will be the ninth and final single to come from your album ‘Nothing But The Beat’. How do you feel for this album to be coming to an end, so to speak?
Você está atualmente se preparando para lançar ‘Play Hard’, que será o nono e último single extraído do seu álbum ‘Nothing But The Beat’. Como você se sente por este álbum estar “chegando ao fim”, por assim dizer?
I have to say, I’m so happy to finish with ‘Play Hard’ because it was such a big record. I couldn’t release it before because we had issues with clearance, but we’re finally ready and the video is insane, I love it! And to finish the album with such a big record… It’s wonderful.
Eu devo dizer que estou muito feliz por terminar o ‘Play Hard’, porque foi realmente um grande disco. Eu não pude lançá-lo antes porque tive algumas dificuldades para liberá-lo, mas finalmente está pronto e o vídeo é insano! Eu adorei! Encerrar o álbum com um grande single… É maravilhoso!
The single features Ne-Yo & Akon, both of whom you have worked with on singles before. How did you get to bring them together for this track? And what do you feel each of them brings to the song?
O single traz Ne-Yo e Akon, com os quais você trabalhou em outros singles antes. Como você conseguiu reuni-los para esta faixa? E o que você sente em relação ao que cada um deles contribuiu para esta música?
If I was going to count my three favourite songwriters, Akon and Ne-Yo would be part of it. So to have the two of them together in a song, and especially when they had never worked together, to me it was obvious that they would have to make a song together and I’m really happy that we’ve managed to do this. I think that they really like each other and they really respect each other, it’s just that they have never had the opportunity to do it before, so yeah, it’s pretty magic to have them both.
Se eu listasse meus três compositores favoritos, Akon e Ne-Yo estariam incluídos. Portanto, ter os dois juntos em uma música, especialmente considerando que eles nunca haviam trabalhado em parceria, para mim era óbvio que eles teriam que fazer uma música juntos e eu estou muito feliz por nós termos conseguido acertar isso. Eu acho que eles gostam mesmo um do outro e realmente se respeitam, só que eles nunca tiveram a oportunidade de fazer isto antes, então, é pura magia ter os dois.
The chorus of the track samples iconic Alice Deejay track ‘Better Off alone’. Are you a fan of the original track? And when did the idea to use it first come to you?
O refrão deste single é um sample da icônica faixa ‘Better Off Alone’, da Alice Deejay. Você é um fã da faixa original? E quando a idéia de usá-la surgiu para você?
For ‘Play Hard’, I used a sample from Alice Deejay, one of the biggest European Dance records of all time. It’s funny because I was not really playing the record at the time it was out. I think the way I played with it is interesting.
Para ‘Play Hard’, eu usei uma amostra desse disco de Alice Deejay, um dos maiores discos dançantes europeus de todos os tempos. É engraçado porque eu não estava realmente tocando muito esse disco no momento em que surgiu. Acho que a maneira como eu trabalhei ela foi interessante.
The video for the track is unique to say the least. How did the concept for the video begin to come to life?
O vídeo para a faixa é único, para dizer o mínimo! Como é que o conceito para o vídeo começou a criar vida?
This video is the video I was waiting to do for so many years. It’s telling about a sub-culture in Mexico that is real, the pointy boots, you know, Tribal, all of this – This is a real sub-culture in Mexico. I love to show people that have an obsession, have a passion, and want to be the best at what they do. A lot of people said “What? Pointy boots? What’s the point? These people are crazy”, and I’m like “No they’re not crazy, they’re into their things” and I thought it was fun to show this to the world, and to do it with a sense of humour obviously.
Este vídeo é aquele que eu estava esperando fazer há tantos anos. Ele fala sobre uma subcultura no México, que é real, as botas de bico fino, você sabe, Tribal, tudo isso – Esta é uma subcultura de verdade no México. Gosto de mostrar às pessoas que têm uma obsessão, que têm uma paixão, e querem ser as melhores no que fazem. Um monte de gente disse: “O quê? Botas de bico fino? Qual é a questão? Estas pessoas são loucas! “e eu penso” Não, eles não são loucos, eles estão na deles, são suas coisas”, e eu pensei que era divertido mostrar isso para o mundo e fazê-lo com algum senso de humor, é claro.
You had a great year last year, and this year has got off to a massive start too. How has 2013 been for you so far?
Você teve um grande ano em 2012 e este ano teve um grande começo também. Como tem sido 2013 para você?
2013 sounds and looks really, really amazing. I’m in the happiest place possible right now because, as I said before, this is my last single with ‘Play Hard’ and I’m working on the new album, but I have all the time in the world to do it so I’m just experimenting with sounds, melodies, ideas, directions… It’s just the most magical moment where I’m totally free. I don’t have to deliver at a certain time, I don’t have to respect a certain style… I’m just having fun in the studio, that’s it.
2013 soa e parece realmente incrível. Estou na posição mais feliz possível agora porque, como eu disse antes, este é o meu último single com ‘Play Hard’ e eu estou trabalhando no novo álbum, mas eu tenho todo o tempo do mundo para fazê-lo e eu só estou experimentando com sons, melodias, ideias, direções… É apenas o momento mais mágico, onde eu sou totalmente livre. Eu não tenho prazo para entregar o trabalho, eu não tenho que respeitar um certo estilo… Eu estou apenas me divertindo no estúdio, é isso.
You have been extremely busy DJing since the turn of the year. What have been some of the highlights so far for you?
Você tem estado extremamente ocupado tocando desde a virada do ano. Quais foram os maiores destaques até agora para você?
You’re going to say I’m very Mexican lately… I’m making this video about Mexican sub-culture, but yeah, one of the craziest shows I had lately was at Azteca Stadium, which is the biggest stadium in Latin America, in Mexico City. It was really, really incredible. First, to feel a huge stadium like this is crazy. I don’t even think people realise what it is for a DJ to do that, and second, the crowd was so enthusiastic.
Você vai dizer que estou muito “mexicano” ultimamente… Estou fazendo este vídeo sobre a subcultura mexicana, mas um dos shows mais loucos que eu fiz recentemente foi no Estádio Azteca, que é o maior estádio da América Latina, na Cidade do México. Foi realmente incrível! Primeira vez que me senti em um enorme estádio como este, foi uma loucura! Eu nem acho que as pessoas percebem o que é para um DJ fazer isso e para completar, a multidão estava muito entusiasmada.
You recently reached over 40 million Facebook fans, which is a huge landmark for anyone, but particularly as you are the first electronic music artist to do so. How does that make you feel?
Recentemente, você chegou a mais de 40 milhões de fãs no Facebook, o que é um grande marco para qualquer um, mas especialmente porque você é o primeiro artista da música eletrônica a fazer isso. Como se sente?
40,000,000 fans on Facebook, that is insane, I cannot believe it myself. It’s like a country! We celebrated this by giving away a remix of ‘Play Hard’ by R3hab to each fan He’s an incredible DJ/Producer, yeah, it’s a big deal. Thank you to all of you, it’s really incredible, it’s such a big and fantastic community now.
